No Country For Old Trends | Yuca Bar

Today’s restaurant review features an old faithful of mine! A restaurant my boyfriend and I have no quarries visiting whenever we want a GOOD meal and strong alcoholic drinks without breaking the bank.

Yuca Bar is literally one of my FAVORITE restaurants in the city. Mostly for its special Yuca Burger. And no I usually don’t go out to eat to just order a burger! It defeats the purpose of eating out, but I always make an exception for Yuca Bar. This burger is just super special!

About Yuca

Yuca is a Spanish restaurant located in East Village, a popular bar hopping and restaurant area for millennials. Once inside, you’re greeted by insanely loud Spanish music, people screaming at each other over the music, and christmas lights streamed along the bannisters. I’m actually quite fond of the atmosphere. Though my voice is always a bit sore upon leaving, something about the look and feel of Yuca makes you feel transported to a little magical bar in Mexico.

About The Food

The menu features a tapas menu that can alternatively be ordered as appetizers or meals, and 12 separate full entrees. Honestly, the less items on a menu, the better. I appreciate when a restaurant can execute a few dishes really well than a whole lot of dishes mediocre!

◊ Sangria & Yucajito: Like.

No matter what you get to drink from Yuca Bar, know that it WILL be strong! That’s the good thing about Yuca Bar! You’ll probably leave a bit happier than you came if you keep drinking. Two drinks will probably work.

◊ Empanadas Mixtas: Like.

Ordering the empanadas, you receive one chicken, one seafood, and one beef. And surprisingly, my date and I both agreed the best one was the shrimp empanada. We guessed the chicken would be best, but it turns out, the shrimp mixture in the seafood empanada is the same shrimp mixture in our beloved Yuca Burger. So of course, the shrimp would be our favorite! Besides that the sauces aren’t anything to rave about, but I’d eat three shrimp empanadas without sauce happily.

◊ Platano Relleno: Like.

Plaintain with pulled pork. The pork is salty as you would expect and the plantain slightly sweet. Its a nice combination of flavor, but it isn’t a dish I would go wild for. You wouldn’t be missing out on much if you skipped ordering this item, in my opinion. It’s good, but it’s not crazy delicious.

◊ Yuca Burger with Yuca Fries: LOVE.

“Half pound ground beef topped w/ Spicy shrimp, roasted corn salsa, Avocado & Manchego cheese.” Plus an onion ring!

You guys, this damn burger is amazing! The spicy shrimp and roasted corn salsa really set this burger apart from any I’ve ever had before. It’s like combining surf and turf into one item! Maybe it’s a strange combination, maybe you think it wouldn’t work together so well, BUT you’d be wrong! And for only $17, you won’t be disappointed! This is my absolute favorite burger from ANY restaurant! The yuca fries isn’t an easy flavor to explain, but with the garnishing Yuca Bar supplies on top, I’d recommend trying yuca fries just to experience the taste. I do like these fries and I get them every time I order this burger instead of regular french fries.

◊ Churrasco: N/A

Grilled skirt steak with roasted garlic mashed potato and mushroom chimichurri.

This last dish I haven’t had myself, but definitely plan on ordering next time I visit! Just to switch things up from my usual go-to burger! PLUS it looks like it tastes amazing! I think I had one bite of this dish a long time ago, but i definitely don’t remember what it tastes like. I just know that my date always enjoyed their dish when they ordered it. I’m sure it must be good! I’ll be sure to update my review once I’ve tried this dish!

Until next time!
