I often sit and wonder,
When will anyone give me a chance?
It’s the struggling artist’s favorite question.
When will I FINALLY make it?
If you’re a dreamer, you know exactly what I mean. I’ll write up a blog post the whole time questioning whether it’s worth it, whether anyone is actually reading, and whether it will go viral.
When will I be seen?
I was daydreaming one night. Wondering when those companies that you see all over Instagram working with your favorite bloggers would want to work with me! By no means are these fortune-500 companies, but they’re companies that definitely circulate around Instagram. It made me think is NC4OT too young to consider? Is NC4OT too lame? When will I get the opportunity to be a part of the blogger in-crowd? And mind you, I did have a very, SPECIFIC company in mind.
A few minutes later, speak of the devil, I was contacted by that EXACT company. It was weird. Lol a “That’s So Raven” moment.
And I took it as a sign. You’re valuable. You’re just as cool as the cool kids. You CAN sit at the popular table with all the popular bloggers and all the popular IG companies!
But if you’ve ever seen a cliche teen movie, popularity is never what it seems! As soon as I was told the requirements of the collaboration, I was OUT. I no longer wanted to work with the company. What they had in mind didn’t align with my brand.
It just wasn’t me.
We all want to be seen. We all want opportunities. And deep down, you may even want to be popular. But that exchange reminded me that popularity isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Honestly,A lost opportunity doesn't mean it's the last opportunity. Click To Tweet
Girl, miss one train – i.e. “opportunity” – and the next is coming in a couple of minutes. I can miss that 9:30 train to class, but there WILL be another one at 9:35, at 9:40, and at 9:45 and I will STILL get to class on time. I may have to haul a little bit more ass to get there lol, but I WILL MAKE IT ON TIME.
I was so eager for acknowledgement! And had I not taken a step back and evaluate the deal, I would have agreed to be someone I’m not and promote something I don’t care for. All just to be seen. To be popular.
Now, don’t get me wrong! I’ve always taken my brand very seriously! And I often refuse to work with companies that I feel are not a match or are OVERPRICED. I will NOT have a company DECEIVEEE or SCAM my readers! But I was so excited to work with a “daydream company” that I sat there trying to find a way to weave and intertwine a BAD deal into my GREAT platform.
DO NOT COMPROMISE!
Don’t worry about popularity! Don’t sacrifice your quality! And especially, do NOT undervalue yourself and your worth!
YOU WILL MAKE IT. ON YOUR OWN TIME.
Even if you have to haul ass and work a little harder to make it to the next train.
